mckenna // 1 year session // bedford kentucky photographer // sneak peek

I can’t believe how much little McKenna has grown since her six months session last fall. I met this family outside of their hometown of Bedford, Kentucky for this session. We tried to incorporate simple, natural props as well as some vintage ones for McKenna’s one year session.

For booking into the Baby Collection, please email amyjohorn@gmail.com

how will my photo crop? // madison indiana engagement photographer

I put together this little guide (featuring the beautiful Danica and handsome Andrew from our amazing engagement session in Madison, Indiana) for my clients who are choosing what size images to print. I always love when clients print images from their family session to display in the home or engagement session to display at guest book tables or entrances to receptions.

These are also great to keep in mind when printing out details shots from newborn photography sessions or looking to see how backgrounds will crop on portraits with nature backgrounds.

As a photographer, I love nothing more than to walk into a home and see family photos on display. Even more of a compliment is when I see pictures I’ve taken turned into art on their walls. Many times, it’s difficult to think of where to start with turning a blank wall into a showcase of your family.

Each week I’ll be posting a few images I’ve found on the world wide web here for you to gain inspiration from. Click the image to trace to the root image of the photo, as these are not my images.

Happy Monday for all of you readers. Hope these images help inspire you to create and display beautiful works of photography!

This would be excellent to display a first year overview from the Baby Collection program or even your favorites from one session:

what a great way to incorporate pictures from the newborn session into the nursery. I really love the one large image with supporting smaller ones around it.

harsin family // madison indiana family photographer

When I talk to families about choosing a location for their family photography sessions, I can’t help but use this session from Madison, Indiana as an example. Amanda put thought into the family’s wardrobe and knew she wanted the main location near an old tobacco barn on the family’s property. When Amanda and I first started planning her family session, she explained to me how important she felt it was for children to be photographed at their home and wanted to have her children’s portraits taken in their own element. I loved focusing on natural family interaction as well as capturing child portraits and the parents as a couple to create a diverse as well as coordinating photo session to be displayed on a gallery wall.

Here are my favorites from this family session! For booking and availability, please email amyjohorn@gmail.com

what to wear // indiana family photographer //

What do I wear?

When I planned the self-timer session with my husband (missed it, see my favorites ) I had a meltdown with this question. And moreover, what does my husband wear? How do we coordinate without being too matchy?

I went bonkers over this and I TOTALLY feel all you who ask me the same before your sessions. I do get asked this question quite often prior to the sessions – especially family sessions. While there is no clear answer, I’ve cooked up a few tips and examples as a resource for my current and future clients. Let’s face it, we are all past the 1990s fad of all blue jeans and all black or white T-shirts. (You and I both know you are all so much more savvy than that!) Family photos of today have the ability to represent your personalities as well as showcase a coordinated color scheme.

Now that I say this, there’s no need to run out and buy new outfits for everyone, but a little thought can be fun and make a HUGE difference in your portraits.

1.) Start with one person first, (Mom, this is a great time to put yourself first!) and base your choices around that outfit. If you’re unsure about which color should be a base color, think about the area in your home that you’re going to display the images and choose one that will coordinate seamlessly.

2.) Keep it simple. Always gravitate towards solid colors or simple patterns. Really bold patterns can distract from what’s really important…your family! It’s great to mix solids and simple patterns for a diverse look in the group posing.

3.) Add texture! And by texture, I mean layers (you’ll see this in a photo example below) Put a sweater over a button down shirt, add light jackets, layered tees with denim, knitted scarves and hats, tutus…and the list keeps going! Texture not only adds an element of interest to a photograph but it makes for easy clothing changes.

4.) Avoid shirts with words, animals, logos and anything else that might be distracting and date a photograph. A little trendy is ok…just don’t over-do it. People’s eyes will go right to the logo and miss the art that is created. Think about this with jewelry also (can I get a high five for slap bracelets and neon anything?!)

5.) Avoid solid white or black clothing. (From my point of view: It’s tricky to photograph, not very interesting.)

6.) If I’m photographing more than one child, trust me when I say they do not need to match. It’s great to let their unique personalities come through. Just stick to a couple of basic colors or choose outfits with coordinating (READ: not matching) elements. I have a GREAT example of this from last fall. These little girls are adorable!

7.) Shoes… oh yeah, what about those? Some of the shots will show your feet, so be aware of what you put on them! Leave those old cruddy sneakers at home. For children, PLEASE no cartoon character or light up sneakers! (I’m for real here!) If it’s warmer weather or summer, just go for sandals or an open style shoe. They are relatively inexpensive and are easily removed for my favorite: bare feet! If it’s winter, add some cute and stylish boots…both for the kids and the adults!

After all of this, if you still aren’t quite sure what to wear, send me an e-mail at amyjohorn@gmail.com or lets plan to meet a little early for our session to weigh our options. Parents please read: Pack extra clothing. Again, pack extra clothing. Extra clothing is always a good idea with children in case of a slip, fall, spit up, spill, tear, rip… or anything else kids are capable of! : )

Enjoy these photos and I give huge KUDOS to these fashion-forward clients! I’m working on a “what to wear” for your engagement photos next! Stay tuned and much love to you all.

Here’s a great way to choose a ‘cool’ color scheme and make it work with patterns and mixing colors. I love the purples and gray tones in this! The clothing on the kids are simple and the parents look great too!

mary // newborn session // cincinnati ohio baby photographer

Take a moment and welcome the newest member to the AHP Baby Collection, Mary! This little wonder arrived in Cincinnati Ohio right before Christmas! I was so blessed to be able to capture this momma’s pregnancy in maternity photos and then meet little Mary, who was the best present her parents could receive so close to the holidays.

I took time off from my day job during the holiday season and was able to easily fit in a session with this sweetie. Here’s a little sneak peek of the great time I had during our session.

Hope everyone had a restful and filling Thanksgiving holiday. It was wonderful to see my friends and family, squeeze in a few short sessions and top it off with a long weekend with my husband.

Here’s a quick peek from my session with Kailee, the winner of my Facebook Fan Appreciation session giveaway. She is such a doll and has the most beautiful brown eyes!

And how cool is this trike? Sixty years old and still working great! 🙂

mckenna // 6 months session // madison indiana baby photographer

I fell so much in love with all of the pictures from McKenna’s six months photo session in Bedford, Ky. These photos are wonderful in the fact that they are taken at the family’s home, the grandparents’ home as well as McKenna’s great uncle’s cabin (overlooking a beautiful pond). She was full of laughter and smiles through outfit and scenery changes and had a blast in the baby tub! I was fortunate enough to photograph little McKenna for her three month photos (here) and will be seeing her in November for her 9 months photos.

Here are a few of my favorites from her session. For information on the Baby Collection program, please visit here on my site. For pricing and booking for the Baby Collection, please email me at amyjohorn@gmail.com.

dryden family session // madison indiana family portrait photographer

I can’t express how great it was to meet the beautiful Dryden family. Parents John and Sarah are so in love with one another and their three amazing children. I could have stayed with them all day! We met in Madison, Indiana at their home, which I will say had THE most amazing lighting and backdrop for a family session. Between their Americana style home and hand-made plank swing (made by Jack himself!) I was in photographer’s heaven.

taylor and vanessa // child portrait photography // madison, indiana

It was a hot day when I met Vanessa and Taylor in Madison, Indiana. Their grandmother contacted me months ago when she knew the girls would be visiting her from out of town. She wanted to plan a “model day” where the girls would get to pose and have fun for the afternoon with me. Taylor, who is very outgoing, explained when we met how she wanted to be a model and be on the TV show “America’s Next Top Model” one day. She said she watches the show for inspiration. (Did I mention this beautiful young lady is only nine?) Vanessa couldn’t have been more opposite. This shy little girl smiled coyly at me when we met at clung to her grandma. I was fortunate that Vanessa warmed up when she saw how much fun her big sister was having in front of the camera!

In honor of Allison’s arrival tomorrow morning, I thought I’d share some of my favorite images from Jessica’s maternity session. Jess had never formally had her photos taken and was admittedly nervous for our session. When we finished she said “that was easy!” (which instantly made me feel better!)

I’ll be doing baby Allison’s first photos this weekend and cannot wait!

edwards family session // madison indiana family photographer

Hannah and I planned this family photography session months in advance and little did we know that a heat wave was about to hit the Ohio River Valley in July. I arrived at the family’s farmhouse in Milton, Kentucky (across the river from Madison, Indiana) for their family portrait session just in time for the sun’s heat to waver and give us a small break from the blistering summer temperatures.

When I arrived at the home, I met Hannah, John and their three beautiful children being themselves at their home. The children played peek-a-boo with me through the windows. It was their first family photography session, ever. Boy was I nervous!

After spending just a few minutes with the family, it was apparent they had a deep love and connection with one another. This spiritual family is also in the process of adopting a child from Ethiopia. Keep up with their journey here

Please enjoy some of my favorites from the session!

brayden 6 months // lawrenceburg indiana photographer

With the cutest dimples and happiest giggle, I spend part of a Sunday morning with the adorable Brayden and his beautiful mother. I was so happy to have this shoot in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, near my home. I have been in the area a few years and am working to raise my client base in the Dearborn County area, specifically my photography in Lawrenceburg and Aurora Indiana.

I loved my time with this adorable baby and hope you enjoy some of my favorite images also!

baby grace {lawrenceburg, indiana newborn photography}

I can’t contain my excitement about being able to watch this family grow! I first photographed baby Grace when I captured Denise’s maternity (here) and then once the little angel was just a week old. I traveled to the family’s home outside of Lawrenceburg, Indiana (which for those of you who don’t know, is just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio’s outer loop).

I can’t wait for her other milestone sessions to come! (three months is just around the corner)

Here are some of my favorites of baby Grace and her family from the newborn session.

Baby Devon

I traveled down from my home, near Lawrenceburg, Indiana to meet with Crystal, Zach and little baby Devon near Madison, Indiana for our baby and family portrait session.

Sweet baby Devon was such a wonderful little model. With a little grin showing through from his dreams, he was my personal photographer’s dream! I hope you enjoy some of my favorite images from the session as much as I do.

I can’t wait to see Devon for his six months photos this fall.

Denise Maternity Session (favorites!)

To celebrate Denise reaching full term *today* I thought I’d post some of my favorites from her maternity session. We met just outside of Lawrenceburg, Indiana at the couple’s home. Denise and Zak drove me down a windy little road to a beautiful covered bridge with a babbling creek behind it. After they got their feet wet with a few test shots, the tension disappeared and it was like Denise and Zak forgot I was there.

We arrived back to their home just in time for the sunset to blanket us in warm light. It was here that Denise really let her personality, and her deep love for baby Grace, shine through these photos.

Congratulations to Denise and Zak, who will be expecting little Grace at the beginning of June, when I will visit the family again for some newborn photos. (can’t wait!)

Baby Paityn

I had the pleasure of meeting this tiny baby girl when she was just 10 days old. Her grandmother and mother arrived a little early at the photoshoot with this wide-eyed little girl and we spent some time snuggling and doting over Paityn.

I met them in Milton, Ky., near Madison, Indiana, where I do most of my indoor infant shoots. I was finally able to try out some of the headbands that I made a while back and my pink tutu on a newborn!

Here are a few of my favorites from the shoot. For all of my favorites, visit the Imagine Photography page at www.facebook.com/ahornphotography

Thanks, and enjoy!

A big thanks to my friend, Robin Hampton, who made this adorable hat!

davis family (sneak peek!)

The best part about the weather breaking for the season? Well, it is certainly not all the rain we’ve been having! But the rain has helped the beautiful flowers come into bloom and the grass be extra green. Although we had to rearrange this shoot last minute to miss the rain, my session with Alicia and her beautiful family went off without a hitch! The weather was perfect, the family was up for anything and these awesome children had the best smiles for me! Between playing dress up and racing monster trucks, this was a fun-filled session!

We met at the Historic Lanier Mansion in Madison, Indiana for this Saturday evening shoot. Although the river had flooded the back lawn of the mansion and high school prom go-ers in eccentric dresses were abound, there were still plenty of great nooks in the gardens as backdrops.

I loved working with these guys and hope to again in the future!

spring has sprung!

I love that spring is finally here! One of my favorite parts of spring is being able to have photo sessions outdoors again. The grass turns green, the flowers bloom and the kids LOVE running around.

Here are a few of my favorites from an impromptu session at a birthday party for these three children in Bedford, Ky. My cousin throws a party celebrating all three birthdays at once. I didn’t have any photos of little Ryland yet, so I took the opportunity to rally the kiddos. I’m hoping to have the same success at this year’s party (which happens to be tomorrow!)

If you are wanting memorable family photos, I will travel within two hours of Dillsboro, Indiana for family photography sessions. For booking and rates, please email at amyjohorn@gmail.com

schafer family favorites

Here are a few of my favorites from my Sunday afternoon session with the Schafer family. The session was at the Schafer home in Canaan, outside of Madison, Indiana. It was the first time in several years that this entire clan came together in the same place! It was great to watch them all smile at one other and enjoy one another’s company.
