erin + drew // madison indiana engagement photographer // sneak peek

Erin and Drew are the kind of couple most aspire to be. Comfortable in their own skins. Supportive of one another. Absolutely adorable but not in the finish-each-others-sentences kind of way (but would still be awesome even if they did). I am so honored to be photographing their fall wedding in Milton, Kentucky at the Richwood Plantation. Here is a little peek at our vintage engagement session at the Jefferson Proving Grounds in Madison, Indiana.

amanda and kyle // madison indiana engagement photographer // sneak peek

Madison, Indiana was a sleepy little town Saturday morning when I met up with Kyle and Amanda for their engagement session. With a dreamy haze in the air, we set out to capture a love connection that most people only see in the movies (or read about in a Nicolas Sparks book!)

I’m very honored that Amanda and Kyle asked me to photograph their July wedding in Cincinnati this year. After seeing how easy they made my job during the engagement session, I know that their wedding day is going to be unforgettable. These two make me want to go snuggle up with my hubby for dreamy photoshoot!

Here’s a little peek at yesterday:

how will my photo crop? // madison indiana engagement photographer

I put together this little guide (featuring the beautiful Danica and handsome Andrew from our amazing engagement session in Madison, Indiana) for my clients who are choosing what size images to print. I always love when clients print images from their family session to display in the home or engagement session to display at guest book tables or entrances to receptions.

These are also great to keep in mind when printing out details shots from newborn photography sessions or looking to see how backgrounds will crop on portraits with nature backgrounds.

As a photographer, I love nothing more than to walk into a home and see family photos on display. Even more of a compliment is when I see pictures I’ve taken turned into art on their walls. Many times, it’s difficult to think of where to start with turning a blank wall into a showcase of your family.

Each week I’ll be posting a few images I’ve found on the world wide web here for you to gain inspiration from. Click the image to trace to the root image of the photo, as these are not my images.

Happy Monday for all of you readers. Hope these images help inspire you to create and display beautiful works of photography!

This would be excellent to display a first year overview from the Baby Collection program or even your favorites from one session:

what a great way to incorporate pictures from the newborn session into the nursery. I really love the one large image with supporting smaller ones around it.

what to wear // indiana family photographer //

What do I wear?

When I planned the self-timer session with my husband (missed it, see my favorites ) I had a meltdown with this question. And moreover, what does my husband wear? How do we coordinate without being too matchy?

I went bonkers over this and I TOTALLY feel all you who ask me the same before your sessions. I do get asked this question quite often prior to the sessions – especially family sessions. While there is no clear answer, I’ve cooked up a few tips and examples as a resource for my current and future clients. Let’s face it, we are all past the 1990s fad of all blue jeans and all black or white T-shirts. (You and I both know you are all so much more savvy than that!) Family photos of today have the ability to represent your personalities as well as showcase a coordinated color scheme.

Now that I say this, there’s no need to run out and buy new outfits for everyone, but a little thought can be fun and make a HUGE difference in your portraits.

1.) Start with one person first, (Mom, this is a great time to put yourself first!) and base your choices around that outfit. If you’re unsure about which color should be a base color, think about the area in your home that you’re going to display the images and choose one that will coordinate seamlessly.

2.) Keep it simple. Always gravitate towards solid colors or simple patterns. Really bold patterns can distract from what’s really important…your family! It’s great to mix solids and simple patterns for a diverse look in the group posing.

3.) Add texture! And by texture, I mean layers (you’ll see this in a photo example below) Put a sweater over a button down shirt, add light jackets, layered tees with denim, knitted scarves and hats, tutus…and the list keeps going! Texture not only adds an element of interest to a photograph but it makes for easy clothing changes.

4.) Avoid shirts with words, animals, logos and anything else that might be distracting and date a photograph. A little trendy is ok…just don’t over-do it. People’s eyes will go right to the logo and miss the art that is created. Think about this with jewelry also (can I get a high five for slap bracelets and neon anything?!)

5.) Avoid solid white or black clothing. (From my point of view: It’s tricky to photograph, not very interesting.)

6.) If I’m photographing more than one child, trust me when I say they do not need to match. It’s great to let their unique personalities come through. Just stick to a couple of basic colors or choose outfits with coordinating (READ: not matching) elements. I have a GREAT example of this from last fall. These little girls are adorable!

7.) Shoes… oh yeah, what about those? Some of the shots will show your feet, so be aware of what you put on them! Leave those old cruddy sneakers at home. For children, PLEASE no cartoon character or light up sneakers! (I’m for real here!) If it’s warmer weather or summer, just go for sandals or an open style shoe. They are relatively inexpensive and are easily removed for my favorite: bare feet! If it’s winter, add some cute and stylish boots…both for the kids and the adults!

After all of this, if you still aren’t quite sure what to wear, send me an e-mail at amyjohorn@gmail.com or lets plan to meet a little early for our session to weigh our options. Parents please read: Pack extra clothing. Again, pack extra clothing. Extra clothing is always a good idea with children in case of a slip, fall, spit up, spill, tear, rip… or anything else kids are capable of! : )

Enjoy these photos and I give huge KUDOS to these fashion-forward clients! I’m working on a “what to wear” for your engagement photos next! Stay tuned and much love to you all.

Here’s a great way to choose a ‘cool’ color scheme and make it work with patterns and mixing colors. I love the purples and gray tones in this! The clothing on the kids are simple and the parents look great too!

valentine’s day // couple’s photographer // dillsboro indiana

Happy Valentine’s Day, loves. I hope that you have felt love or loved today just as you would any other day. I wanted to take a moment to post some personal photos for your viewing pleasure. My husband and I took these on our farm in Indiana last fall with a tripod and a timer. After this session, I decided to invest in a remote for the timer. There was a lot of running back and forth for these! I’m sure that’s what made my husband even more natural because he was pretty humored at the effort I was making to get some new photos of us.

We have never had our photos professionally taken and after a fall of engagement sessions and weddings, I was ITCHING for some images of the two of us! I had also just purchased my Canon 5D Mark II and thought this was the perfect opportunity to test it out! 🙂

Happy Valentine’s Day to my dear husband, Jimmy, who is working in Washington D.C. this week. I’ll see you next week, darling.

I had the amazing honor of photographing Amanda and Scott’s beautiful and simple fall wedding in Madison Indiana. I knew after photographing their engagement session () that these two were going to make my job a breeze.

Amanda filled her wedding with DIY touches and the entire event felt so personal. The couple wed downtown historic Madison and had their reception at an adorable venue on the hilltop.

Here is the wedding story i put together for the couple to have their images at hand. Their album will be arriving shortly!

I am still booking for 2012 and have approximately four wedding slots left. For date and price inquiries, email amyjohorn@gmail.com

whitney and caleb // mr. and mrs. // portrait photographer madison indiana

I met with Whitney and Caleb on their one year wedding anniversary for a short session. So often, newlyweds don’t have any other photographs of themselves outside of the white dress and black tux shots from their wedding day.

This couple is truly fun to be around and are two of the happiest people I’ve ever met.

Here’s some of my favorites from the day. Enjoy!

Sorry I’ve been so MIA lately! I’ve been so busy with preparing for a craft show (I also make jewelry), working on home remodels and trying to catch up on sessions before the holiday season is in too full of a swing.

I had the honor of photographing my dear friends Amanda and Scott on their beautiful wedding day. I wanted to post a few for you to see.

Can they be any cuter together? I love them and their love story.

erin & rich // lawrenceburg indiana engagement photography

I met Erin for the first time at our beautiful local library to talk about her wedding, her ideas on photography and having me as her photographer. Her eyes sparkled when she spoke of her wedding plans and most of all, her fiance Rich. She wanted fall engagement pictures so we waiting until the hills of southeastern Indiana turned bright with color and met at her family’s home in Moores Hill, Indiana (which is just outside of Lawrenceburg). We started there and made our way within a few miles of the home, including a creek where Rich and Erin went fishing! I love the images from this day and wanted to share a few that I’m working on!

Congratulations Erin and Rich! I can’t wait to capture your beautiful wedding day in Madison, Indiana next summer!

amanda & scott { Madison, Indiana Engagement Photography }

I’m very excited to finally share some images from my engagement session with Amanda and Scott. We were all very bummed when our first engagement session date was rained out and couldn’t reschedule for two weeks due to Amanda’s crazy work schedule. But needless to say, we were all very happy with the not-as-muggy Ohio River Valley weather when we did finally do the session. I traveled down from Lawrenceburg, Indiana to Historic Madison, Indiana for this amazing engagement shoot. we also drove up to Deputy, which is just south of North Vernon Indiana to finish the couple’s photos.

These two are so in love that it is exploding out of every photo. (You’ll see!)

I can’t wait for their wedding this November, where I am fortunate enough to be their photographer!

beautiful bride, Velvett.

Here are a few of my favorite photos of Velvett (Trantham) Hill on her wedding day. This Madison, Indiana resident traveled with her (now) husband and 20 of their closest friends and family down to Gatlinburg, TN for an intimate wedding in February.

Josh couldn’t have wished for a more beautiful bride, and neither could my camera!

introducing mr. and mrs. hill

I’ll admit. (sometimes) I cry when editing wedding photos. Not all the time. But it’s happened at least once for both weddings I photographed in February. (seriously)

There was someone so special about the way Josh and Velvett looked at each other in these photographs. Their intimate get-a-away wedding to Gatlinburg, TN was so sweet.

Despite all the chaos of traveling, out of town guests arriving, hotel issues and forgotten wedding sand (Josh was a hero for going back to the hotel and getting it!), this couple stayed so focused on the reason they were there in the first place. 🙂

Here are a few photos that I’ve processed that I’m pretty in love with.

groom and a go cart

I feel so blessed to have been chosen to capture Madison, Indiana couple Josh and Velvett’s special day in Gatlinburg, TN. I was invited to a pancake breakfast with the girls the morning of the wedding (delish!) and was in for a real treat when the groom and groomsmen informed me they’d like their “getting ready photos” riding go-carts! After photographing some from the safety of the observation deck, I ventured into a double cart to have some “live-action” I haven’t jumped head-first into editing this part of the day, but did enjoy this shot of the husband-to-be.

Look for more to come from this wedding. What.A.Blast!

Here are a few of the first look photos from bridget and matt’s wedding. It was so great to get to meet up with matt before bridget arrived at the library. Instead of a ball of nerves, he was cool and calm. This couple was great and up for anything! The librarians said they had never had a bride and groom have photos taken in the library (to their knowledge) so kudos to this bride and groom for making history!
