landon // six months session // madison indiana baby photographer

I had such a fun time in the Madison, Indiana area for little Landon’s six months photography session. I am very excited to welcome his family into my first year program and am looking forward to his one year session this fall. During our session, Landon had us all giggling with that gummy grin of his. His mom and I worked together to coordinate a few of the themes for his session. She had an owl hat made and I asked my mom to make him a little nest! (Is there anything that woman can’t do?)

Here is a little sneak peek of a few of many favorites from his session. Enjoy!

how will my photo crop? // madison indiana engagement photographer

I put together this little guide (featuring the beautiful Danica and handsome Andrew from our amazing engagement session in Madison, Indiana) for my clients who are choosing what size images to print. I always love when clients print images from their family session to display in the home or engagement session to display at guest book tables or entrances to receptions.

These are also great to keep in mind when printing out details shots from newborn photography sessions or looking to see how backgrounds will crop on portraits with nature backgrounds.

As a photographer, I love nothing more than to walk into a home and see family photos on display. Even more of a compliment is when I see pictures I’ve taken turned into art on their walls. Many times, it’s difficult to think of where to start with turning a blank wall into a showcase of your family.

Each week I’ll be posting a few images I’ve found on the world wide web here for you to gain inspiration from. Click the image to trace to the root image of the photo, as these are not my images.

Happy Monday for all of you readers. Hope these images help inspire you to create and display beautiful works of photography!

This would be excellent to display a first year overview from the Baby Collection program or even your favorites from one session:

what a great way to incorporate pictures from the newborn session into the nursery. I really love the one large image with supporting smaller ones around it.

what to wear // indiana family photographer //

What do I wear?

When I planned the self-timer session with my husband (missed it, see my favorites ) I had a meltdown with this question. And moreover, what does my husband wear? How do we coordinate without being too matchy?

I went bonkers over this and I TOTALLY feel all you who ask me the same before your sessions. I do get asked this question quite often prior to the sessions – especially family sessions. While there is no clear answer, I’ve cooked up a few tips and examples as a resource for my current and future clients. Let’s face it, we are all past the 1990s fad of all blue jeans and all black or white T-shirts. (You and I both know you are all so much more savvy than that!) Family photos of today have the ability to represent your personalities as well as showcase a coordinated color scheme.

Now that I say this, there’s no need to run out and buy new outfits for everyone, but a little thought can be fun and make a HUGE difference in your portraits.

1.) Start with one person first, (Mom, this is a great time to put yourself first!) and base your choices around that outfit. If you’re unsure about which color should be a base color, think about the area in your home that you’re going to display the images and choose one that will coordinate seamlessly.

2.) Keep it simple. Always gravitate towards solid colors or simple patterns. Really bold patterns can distract from what’s really important…your family! It’s great to mix solids and simple patterns for a diverse look in the group posing.

3.) Add texture! And by texture, I mean layers (you’ll see this in a photo example below) Put a sweater over a button down shirt, add light jackets, layered tees with denim, knitted scarves and hats, tutus…and the list keeps going! Texture not only adds an element of interest to a photograph but it makes for easy clothing changes.

4.) Avoid shirts with words, animals, logos and anything else that might be distracting and date a photograph. A little trendy is ok…just don’t over-do it. People’s eyes will go right to the logo and miss the art that is created. Think about this with jewelry also (can I get a high five for slap bracelets and neon anything?!)

5.) Avoid solid white or black clothing. (From my point of view: It’s tricky to photograph, not very interesting.)

6.) If I’m photographing more than one child, trust me when I say they do not need to match. It’s great to let their unique personalities come through. Just stick to a couple of basic colors or choose outfits with coordinating (READ: not matching) elements. I have a GREAT example of this from last fall. These little girls are adorable!

7.) Shoes… oh yeah, what about those? Some of the shots will show your feet, so be aware of what you put on them! Leave those old cruddy sneakers at home. For children, PLEASE no cartoon character or light up sneakers! (I’m for real here!) If it’s warmer weather or summer, just go for sandals or an open style shoe. They are relatively inexpensive and are easily removed for my favorite: bare feet! If it’s winter, add some cute and stylish boots…both for the kids and the adults!

After all of this, if you still aren’t quite sure what to wear, send me an e-mail at amyjohorn@gmail.com or lets plan to meet a little early for our session to weigh our options. Parents please read: Pack extra clothing. Again, pack extra clothing. Extra clothing is always a good idea with children in case of a slip, fall, spit up, spill, tear, rip… or anything else kids are capable of! : )

Enjoy these photos and I give huge KUDOS to these fashion-forward clients! I’m working on a “what to wear” for your engagement photos next! Stay tuned and much love to you all.

Here’s a great way to choose a ‘cool’ color scheme and make it work with patterns and mixing colors. I love the purples and gray tones in this! The clothing on the kids are simple and the parents look great too!

braxton // 6 months portrait session // madison indiana baby photographer

I was so happy to welcome baby boy Braxton into my first year program and photograph his six months session. (For parents who decide to join the program later, I offer a smaller package for six months and one year sessions.) I first met this little guy when he was three months old and his parents participated in my first mini-session day in Madison, Indiana last fall. When his mom selected me to capture the rest of his first year, I was elated!

This little man was such a joy to photograph. He seriously made my job easy by sharing his smiles and loving every outfit we selected for him. His mother came totally prepared for the session: several outfits to choose from to coordinate perfectly with sets, a talking toy he loves, hats, shoes and several other accessories! It was a dream session.

Here is a little sneak peek of Braxton’s six months photo session. For info on the first year program, please email amyjohorn@gmail.com

january self portrait // belated // lawrenceburg indiana photographer

At the beginning of the year, I decided to embark on a small year-long project. I knew there was no way I could do picture-a-day, 52 week challenge or even the 26 week challenge. Nope. I knew I would only disappoint myself and my audience. Instead, I decided to post a monthly self portrait.

If you’re a photographer (professional or just the one who always carries around the camera) then you know the ratio of photos of you to photos of other people is a little skewed. Taking on the advice of a few other photographers, I decided to do a self portrait each month and post them here.

At first I thought this idea was a little egotistical. Then I realized that it was a great way for me to reflect on my month and sum it up with one image. It was a great challenge.

Though a little late, here’s my January 2012 self portrait. It was such a mild winter here in Indiana that I actually LIKED when we had our one bad day of ice and stranded weather. For 24 solid hours I was stuck at my house. No internet. No TV. No husband. It forced me to pick up my camera and see the world through the lens for pleasure (something I hadn’t done for a while.

allison grace // newborn session // madison indiana photographer

I had this little girl in Madison, Indiana for her newborn photography session at just five days new. She was so tiny and sleepy that I was able to get a few really neat composite shots too. πŸ™‚

Here’s the first composite image I did while she was awake. I combined two images to create this one. I had her dad holding on to her in two different areas and used a tripod to keep my camera in the same location. With dad holding her the entire time, little Allison was never in any danger.

This was a really fun composite image. This final image consists of four images. One of just the guitar and three of Allison being held on the guitar by her dad and grandma. Dad is a musician, so this end product ended up being pretty special to him.

Mommy and Daddy are also black belt martial artists, by the way.

I hope everyone has has a beautiful fall weekend. I’ve been super busy with my first mini-session day in Madison, Indiana! Then a family session, meetings (love giving amazing photo art products to clients!) and my nephew Cody’s third birthday pictures.

I can’t believe my little guy is three! Happy Birthday Cody! Auntie Amy loves you so much!

And how cool is this trike? Sixty years old and still working great! πŸ™‚

erin & rich // lawrenceburg indiana engagement photography

I met Erin for the first time at our beautiful local library to talk about her wedding, her ideas on photography and having me as her photographer. Her eyes sparkled when she spoke of her wedding plans and most of all, her fiance Rich. She wanted fall engagement pictures so we waiting until the hills of southeastern Indiana turned bright with color and met at her family’s home in Moores Hill, Indiana (which is just outside of Lawrenceburg). We started there and made our way within a few miles of the home, including a creek where Rich and Erin went fishing! I love the images from this day and wanted to share a few that I’m working on!

Congratulations Erin and Rich! I can’t wait to capture your beautiful wedding day in Madison, Indiana next summer!

I fell so much in love with all of the pictures from McKenna’s six months photo session in Bedford, Ky. These photos are wonderful in the fact that they are taken at the family’s home, the grandparents’ home as well as McKenna’s great uncle’s cabin (overlooking a beautiful pond). She was full of laughter and smiles through outfit and scenery changes and had a blast in the baby tub! I was fortunate enough to photograph little McKenna for her three month photos (here) and will be seeing her in November for her 9 months photos.

Here are a few of my favorites from her session. For information on the Baby Collection program, please visit here on my site. For pricing and booking for the Baby Collection, please email me at amyjohorn@gmail.com.

dryden family session // madison indiana family portrait photographer

I can’t express how great it was to meet the beautiful Dryden family. Parents John and Sarah are so in love with one another and their three amazing children. I could have stayed with them all day! We met in Madison, Indiana at their home, which I will say had THE most amazing lighting and backdrop for a family session. Between their Americana style home and hand-made plank swing (made by Jack himself!) I was in photographer’s heaven.

To kick off this announcement, and because every blog is better with a photo, here’s an image from my recent newborn session : )

laura // portrait session // madison indiana photographer

Laura is such a beautiful woman – inside and out. I was so excited to be able to do a mini-session with her back in chilly January when this San Diego dweller came to visit Indiana. (see our mini-session here) This session, although still a mini, felt much longer (and warmer!) due to not having below freezing wind chills! (or so it seemed…)

I also was able to capture some images of Laura and her adorable son, Nate, during the second half of our session. I’ll post some of those soon. : )

Mini-sessions are a great way to update your headshots, get a great default photo for your social networking, blog or LinkedIn pages. Not to mention, photos from these sessions are typically number one on mom’s (grandparents, siblings, aunts, cousins…) Christmas list! (My mom has been begging me for some recent ones!)

For more information on mini-sessions and booking, please email your inquiry to amyjohorn@gmail.com

Thanks and enjoy!

taylor and vanessa // child portrait photography // madison, indiana

It was a hot day when I met Vanessa and Taylor in Madison, Indiana. Their grandmother contacted me months ago when she knew the girls would be visiting her from out of town. She wanted to plan a “model day” where the girls would get to pose and have fun for the afternoon with me. Taylor, who is very outgoing, explained when we met how she wanted to be a model and be on the TV show “America’s Next Top Model” one day. She said she watches the show for inspiration. (Did I mention this beautiful young lady is only nine?) Vanessa couldn’t have been more opposite. This shy little girl smiled coyly at me when we met at clung to her grandma. I was fortunate that Vanessa warmed up when she saw how much fun her big sister was having in front of the camera!

edwards family session // madison indiana family photographer

Hannah and I planned this family photography session months in advance and little did we know that a heat wave was about to hit the Ohio River Valley in July. I arrived at the family’s farmhouse in Milton, Kentucky (across the river from Madison, Indiana) for their family portrait session just in time for the sun’s heat to waver and give us a small break from the blistering summer temperatures.

When I arrived at the home, I met Hannah, John and their three beautiful children being themselves at their home. The children played peek-a-boo with me through the windows. It was their first family photography session, ever. Boy was I nervous!

After spending just a few minutes with the family, it was apparent they had a deep love and connection with one another. This spiritual family is also in the process of adopting a child from Ethiopia. Keep up with their journey here

Please enjoy some of my favorites from the session!

baby mckenley – 2 months {madison, indiana baby photographer}

I met little McKenley when she was just two months young and full of energy! She was alert and and interactive throughout our entire session! With her loving parents doting over her, McKenley’s love and happiness for her little life is evident throughout each image.

Although I live near Lawrenceburg, Indiana, I traveled to my hometown of Milton, Kentucky for this baby portrait session.

I can’t wait to have this little girl back in front of my lens in a few months!

Baby McKenna – 3 months

I wanted to post some of my favorites from my session with little McKenna and her parents in Milton, Ky. I have the pleasure of working with McKenna for the next nine months as I document all of her milestones! Jenna and Jessie decided to book me for a Milestone Package and if you’re not familiar with it, keep reading! πŸ™‚

I just started offering these packages this spring and boy are they a hit! With the packages, parents are able schedule either two or four sessions within the first 14 months of the baby’s life. Popular times to schedule are newborn (within the first two weeks after birth), three, six or nine months and one year.

When the baby is a newborn, its so great to capture what it was like when they first come into the world. Fun hats, unique props and photos that really capture the baby’s features are the reason many parents choose this session. At three months, it’s all about the little features: learning to smile, tiny hands and feet and snuggling with mommy and daddy. Then when the baby is a self-sitter, we schedule the six month session. These are so fun! These are great for being able to capture the baby’s personality as it’s forming. Fun outfits, props and backgrounds make the six months session unique. Then, when the baby is crawling (generally around nine months) we schedule the mover session. I say this, because the baby is always on the move! Then, to round out the baby’s first year, we schedule the one year session when he/she is walking. These can be a lifestyle portrait session or a fun cake-eating time!

Each of these sessions comes with several poses and a family pose as well as the edited high-resolution images on a disc. I currently offer individual sessions and now full and half Milestone packages. Please email me at amyjohorn@gmail.com for rates and scheduling. June is booking fast so don’t delay!

Complete one of these packages by scheduling a maternity session, then at the end of the first year, we can work together to create an album that your family can cherish for years.

I just love these photos of little McKenna (and her big blue eyes)! Enjoy πŸ™‚

I love the way that Jessie is looking at Jenna, and she at McKenna. One of my favorites!

Love these blues!

davis family (sneak peek!)

The best part about the weather breaking for the season? Well, it is certainly not all the rain we’ve been having! But the rain has helped the beautiful flowers come into bloom and the grass be extra green. Although we had to rearrange this shoot last minute to miss the rain, my session with Alicia and her beautiful family went off without a hitch! The weather was perfect, the family was up for anything and these awesome children had the best smiles for me! Between playing dress up and racing monster trucks, this was a fun-filled session!

We met at the Historic Lanier Mansion in Madison, Indiana for this Saturday evening shoot. Although the river had flooded the back lawn of the mansion and high school prom go-ers in eccentric dresses were abound, there were still plenty of great nooks in the gardens as backdrops.

I loved working with these guys and hope to again in the future!

I enjoyed a lovely sunny morning with the week-old Chase Micheal, the adorable infant son of Katie and Andrew Webster. This tiny wonder was such a great little model.

Chase rounds out the latest of infant boy photography I am doing in the Madison, Indiana area. I just love natural light, artistic photography and was very excited to get the change to test out my new infant props.

Congratulations to the Websters and thank you for letting me document such a great new addition to your family!
